We made it to Guatemala!

It's been a week since we arrived, but somehow it still feels like I'm in a wonderfully long dream.

Our journey started with our plane landing in Guatemala City. We breezed through customs and caught an Uber to our first destination. For many who don’t know, I initially came here for a very special reason—to celebrate my dear friend Alexa's wedding. She married her love of many years, whose family lives in Guatemala. The wedding took place in the beautiful, historic city of La Antigua, surrounded by majestic volcanoes.

Alexa and I go way back to our high school days when we met at volleyball tryouts. We quickly became inseparable, sharing jokes during practice and competing to see who could run faster and jump higher. She was my partner in crime, sitting together on the bus to games, splitting nachos and hot Cheetos, teaching me how to braid my hair, and getting into some harmless trouble every once and a while. She introduced me to many lifelong friends and supported me like a sister when I needed one.

Being there for her unforgettable wedding was a huge honor and joy. There were more roses (and tequila bottles!) than I’d seen in my life. Words can't quite describe how beautiful and fun the wedding was, but maybe the photos capture the magic. I also had the best date ever—thanks, O, for all the pics, getting along with my friends, and hours of dancing!

Aside from the wedding celebrations, we explored La Antigua—a charming town with cobblestone streets, friendly smiling locals, delicious food, and stunning views. Everywhere you look, there are lush green trees and gardens, with the ever-present silhouette of el Volcán de Agua, making it feel truly unreal. We rode a sketchy Ferris wheel, caught some live music, and watched a bunch of soccer; it was a perfect weekend.

So far, what I've loved most about Guatemala is the simplicity and richness of life here. Whether it's someone selling fruit on the street, tending to gardens, guiding tourists, or riding in tuk-tuks (my new favorite way to get around), people live presently and appreciate where they are.

Life here feels more grounded than my more familiar hectic pace. I’m inspired by and seeking more of that simplicity and groundedness.

A few days ago, we took a shuttle to the breathtaking Lake Atitlan, where I'm writing this now. Stay tuned for updates about this amazing place next week! Until then, remember to embrace where you are, stay grounded, and never hesitate to spread your wings.

With love,

Andrea Mayela
